Wētā is the common name for a group of about 100 insect species in the families Anostostomatidae and Rhaphidophoridae endemic to New Zealand. They are giant flightless crickets, and some are among the heaviest insects in the world. Generally nocturnal, most small species are carnivores and scavengers while the larger species are herbivorous.

Ka-Zar of Prehistoria[]

Wētās are one of the few modern animals in the prehistoric landscapes of Prehistoria and they are called Gorbuses by many cavemen across the land. Many of them about size of their modern counterparts in New Zealand, however some grow to the size of a medium sized dog breed and would feast on any animal carcasses. Wētās also roam through jungles of most regions of Prehistoria rather than cold tundras like Zanthodon.
